Measure

Measurement

Measure price distance, time intervals, and percentage moves between two chart points.

Overview

+125 pts4h1.25%Measure
Measure tool showing price difference, time elapsed, and percentage change.
Zoom In Zoom Out Measure

The measure tool calculates and displays the distance between two chart points. It reports the price difference in the 's quote currency, the time interval, and the change — making it a quick-replace substitute for manual calculations. Unlike permanent tools, the measure annotation can be kept on the chart for reference or deleted after use.

Measurement fields

When you complete a measurement, the tool displays three values at the midpoint of the measurement line. Each field can be independently toggled on or off in the settings, allowing you to the measurement display to show only the information you need.

Price delta
Absolute price difference between the two points (e.g., +125.50).
Time delta
Time elapsed between the two points in bars, minutes, hours, or days.
% Change
change from the start price to the end point price.
Point delta
Difference in points or pips (for FX and instruments).

Measurement snap behavior

The measure tool automatically snaps to the nearest bar when you click or release. This ensures that measurements are bar-accurate — they align with actual price rather than arbitrary pixel positions. The snap behavior uses the same bar-snap threshold configured in the settings, so measurements are consistent with crosshair positions.

If you need to measure from a specific price level rather than a bar, hold Alt/Option while clicking to temporarily disable bar snapping. This allows you to set start and end points at any pixel position on the chart, which is useful for measuring gaps between or levels that do not align with bar prices.

Persistent vs transient mode

By default, measurements placed with the measure tool persist on the chart until you delete them. They appear in the object tree alongside other and can be selected, moved, or deleted like any annotation. This is useful when you want to keep a measurement for reference throughout your analysis .

Alternatively, you can enable transient in the settings. In transient mode, the measurement disappears when you release the mouse button or press Esc. This gives you a quick "look and forget" measurement without cluttering the chart. The measurement values flash briefly in a before disappearing.

How to use

  1. 1
    Select the measure tool
Choose the ruler from the zoom and measure toolbar section.
  2. 2
    Set the start point
Click at the first price bar or level you want to measure from.
  3. 3
    Drag to the end point
Hold and to the target bar or level. A dashed line follows the .
  4. 4
    Release to complete
Release the mouse to place the measurement. The label shows price delta, time, and percent change.
  5. 5
    Delete when done
Select the measurement and press Delete, or use the tool to remove it.

★
Pro tip:Use transient for quick ad-hoc measurements — enable it in settings, and measurements disappear automatically after each use, keeping your chart clean.

Best practices

★
Pro tip:Use the measure tool to quickly estimate risk-reward ratios. Place the start at your and the end at your target — the tool shows the exact gain. Then extend from entry to stop-loss for the point loss. the two numbers for your R:R ratio. This lets you evaluate trade quality in seconds without mental math.
ℹ
Note:The time measurement is bar-accurate: it counts the actual number of bars between the two points, not wall-clock time. This matters on instruments with trading sessions and market gaps. A Friday-to-Monday measurement on a daily chart counts as one bar, not three days.
★
Pro tip:Use the delta display for FX and trading. Pip values for FX pairs and point values for futures are shown directly, saving you the conversion step that -based calculations require.
ℹ
Note:Hold Alt/Option to measure from levels that do not align with bar prices — such as the distance between two lines, or from a Fib level to a . This freeform gives the measure tool the versatility of a ruler.

Common issues

!
Caution:If the measurement values seem incorrect, check that the start and end points are in the correct order. The measure tool always subtracts end from start, so a reversed measurement shows a negative price delta.
ℹ
Note:The change calculation uses the start price as the base. A move from $100 to $110 shows +10.00%, and a move from $110 to $100 shows -9.09% (since it is calculated relative to the start price).
ℹ
Note:Measurements on logarithmic scale charts show the change correctly but the line length does not correspond to the price delta in the same way as on linear charts. The numeric values in the label are always correct regardless of scale type.

Advanced: multi-measurement layout

You can place multiple measurements on the same chart. Each measurement is an independent annotation with its own line and label. This is useful for comparing multiple price swings, such as measuring each wave in an Elliott Wave count or comparing the amplitude of successive corrections in a trending market. Each measurement can be individually styled and toggled.

Measurement on non-standard chart types

The measure tool works on all standard (, bar, line, area, ). On non-standard chart types like , , -and-Figure, and , the measurement behavior adapts. Time delta on Renko charts measures the number of bricks rather than time intervals. On Point-and-Figure charts, the price delta is measured in box units. The measure tool automatically detects the chart type and adjusts its display units accordingly.

Keyboard-driven measurement

For users who prefer keyboard interaction, the measure tool can be operated without the mouse. Use Tab to activate the chart area, Enter to set the start , arrow keys to move to the end point, and Enter again to complete the measurement. This keyboard workflow is slower than click- but provides pixel-perfect positioning and is essential for users with accessibility needs.

Measurement on multi-pane layouts

Measurements can span multiple panes in a multi-pane layout. Start the measurement in the main price pane and into an indicator pane below — the measure tool crosses pane boundaries seamlessly. The price delta reflects the main 's price values, and the time delta reflects the shared time . This -pane measurement is useful for measuring the distance from a price level to an indicator extreme (e.g., from a support level to an oversold reading).
