Magnify the chart for detailed analysis of price action.

Zoom In Zoom Out Measure

The zoom-in tool magnifies the chart, reducing the visible and price detail. It is essential for analyzing tight price action, identifying micro-structures, placing , and examining individual candles in detail.

Zoom methods

Zoom in can be triggered in several ways, each suited to different workflows. zoom gives you precise control over the exact region to magnify. -wheel zoom provides , continuous zooming centered on the position. Keyboard zoom applies -step increments centered on the current view.

  • zoom — a around the target area; the chart zooms to fit that rectangle exactly.
  • -wheel zoom — up to zoom in at the position; the chart re-centers on the cursor location.
  • Keyboard zoom — press the + or = key to zoom in a step centered on the current view.
  • Pinch zoom () — on devices, pinch outward to zoom in at the gesture center.

Rectangle zoom in detail

zoom is the most precise zoom method. Select the zoom-in tool, then click and on the chart to define a rectangular region. As you drag, a preview rectangle shows the area that will be magnified. When you release the mouse, the chart zooms to fill the viewport with that region. The aspect ratio of the rectangle is preserved, so the zoomed view matches the of your selection.

Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the to a perfect square. Hold Alt/Option to draw the rectangle from its center outward rather than from a corner. These modifiers give you finer control over the selection geometry.

Scroll-wheel zoom behavior

Scrolling the mouse wheel up zooms in centered on the position. This means you can zoom into a specific area without first dragging a — just position the cursor where you want to magnify and . Each scroll notch applies approximately a 1.2x zoom factor, and the zooming is animated smoothly.

The zoom center is the position at the start of the . If you move the cursor while scrolling, the zoom center updates continuously, letting you "follow" price action as you zoom in. This makes scroll-wheel zoom the fastest method for exploratory analysis.

How to use

  1. 1
    Rectangle zoom
Select the zoom-in tool, click and to define a . Release to zoom into that region.
  2. 2
    Scroll-wheel zoom
Position the where you want to center the zoom, then up.
  3. 3
    Keyboard zoom
Press the + or = key to zoom in incrementally. The view centers on the current chart position.
  4. 4
    Touch zoom
On -enabled devices, pinch outward with two fingers to zoom in.
  5. 5
    Return to previous view
Press Ctrl/Cmd + Z (undo zoom) or use the chart history to go back to the previous zoom level.

Best practices

★
Pro tip:For the fastest workflow, keep one on the mouse for zoom and the other on the keyboard for step zoom. Rectangle zoom is best for targeting a specific region; step zoom is better for gradual exploration.
ℹ
Note:The maximum zoom level varies by resolution. charts can zoom in further than daily bars. If you hit the zoom limit, switch to a lower timeframe to see more granular data.
★
Pro tip:Use undo zoom (Ctrl/Cmd + Z) to quickly return to your previous view after inspecting a detail. This is much faster than zooming back out step by step.
ℹ
Note: zoom preserves the aspect ratio of your selection. For widescreen monitors, a wide rectangle gives a different result than a tall one — choose your selection based on whether you want to focus on or .

Common issues

!
Caution:If -wheel zoom feels too sensitive or not sensitive enough, adjust the zoom speed setting. A setting of 1.0 is the default; higher values zoom faster per scroll notch.
ℹ
Note:When zoomed in very close, the chart may show individual movements rather than price action. This is expected behavior — the is simply more granular at higher zoom levels.
ℹ
Note:Some feeds limit the historical data available for zooming. If you cannot zoom in further, you may have reached the data provider's maximum resolution for the current .

Zoom history

Every zoom action is recorded in a zoom history stack. You can navigate backward and forward through this history using Ctrl/Cmd + Z (undo zoom) and Ctrl/Cmd + Y (redo zoom). The history stack persists as long as the chart is open, letting you freely explore zoom levels without losing track of your starting view.

Zoom & data granularity

The chart automatically loads the appropriate granularity for the current zoom level. When zoomed in to a 5-minute view, the chart loads 1-minute or data. When zoomed out, it loads higher-level aggregated data. This automatic data loading ensures optimal performance while providing the most detailed view available for your selected zoom level.

Zoom animation & easing

When animated zoom is enabled, the zoom transition uses an ease-in-out that accelerates at the start and decelerates at the end. This creates a smooth, professional feel. The animation is approximately 200ms for keyboard zoom and 150ms for -wheel zoom. zoom uses a 250ms animation. These durations can be adjusted in the advanced zoom settings for users who prefer faster or slower transitions.

Zoom reset & home view

Double-clicking the zoom-in tool resets the zoom to the default view (typically showing the most recent 6-12 months of , depending on the ). This serves as a "home" button that returns you to a standard overview from any zoom level. The home view level is configurable in the settings, allowing you to define exactly what zoom level constitutes your view.

Time axis compression

When zooming in on very long timeframes (weekly, monthly), the chart automatically switches to intraday at certain zoom thresholds. For example, zooming in on a daily chart past a certain switches to hourly data, then to 15-minute data. This automatic resolution switching ensures you always see the most detailed data available for the current zoom level without manually changing timeframes.
