Anchored Text

Annotation

A text label pinned to a specific price level and time coordinate. Unlike the fixed Text tool, anchored text scrolls with the chart, keeping the label aligned to its anchor point.

Overview

The Anchored Text tool places a label at a specific price-time coordinate. When you or zoom the chart, the label remains tethered to its anchor point — useful for marking key levels that should stay visible in context. The label includes an optional leader line connecting it to the anchor point, making it what chart element the label refers to. The leader line is particularly when the label body is offset from the to avoid obscuring price .

Use anchored text for permanent labels like major support and resistance levels, pattern targets, or structural notes that must stay aligned with price action across all zoom levels and timeframes. The label body can be dragged away from the to avoid obscuring price while the leader line maintains the . This offset capability is the key advantage over basic labels that sit directly on their reference and potentially cover price action.

Anchored text is the preferred choice for long-term chart that need to remain accurate across different timeframes and zoom levels. The stores both price and time coordinates, so if you switch from a daily chart to a weekly chart, the label repositions itself proportionally relative to the same bar. This timeframe resilience makes anchored text invaluable for analysis workflows where the same chart is analyzed at multiple resolutions and the annotation must remain valid across all of them.

Use Cases / Application

  • Key level labeling — major support and resistance levels with price values that stay attached as you through history. For example, "Major Resistance 1.3500" pinned to the bar where resistance formed.
  • Pattern targets — label the projected target of a breakout or pattern with a pinned to the target price. " Target: 1.3500" stays visible as price approaches the target.
  • Structural notes — annotate swing with observations that remain contextually positioned regardless of zoom level. "This low was tested 3 times" remains attached to the correct bar for reference.
  • analysis — pin notes about higher-timeframe structure that stay visible when you drill down to lower timeframes. For example, a daily resistance stays visible on the 1-hour chart.
  • Collaborative review — leave on specific bars for team members. The ensures everyone sees the at the correct location regardless of their current view.
  • Earnings and event notes — pin notes to the specific bar where earnings were released or a news event occurred. The stays with the bar forever for later review.

Leader line best practices

The leader line is the link between the label body and the anchor point. A dashed leader line (the default on most platforms) visually distinguishes the from trend lines and other solid chart elements. The line color should match or complement the label body color for a cohesive appearance. Leader line of 1–2px is standard; thicker lines can be used for on charts where is prioritized over subtlety.

When offsetting the label body, keep the offset direction consistent across all labels on the same chart. For example, place all labels to the of their anchors. Consistent offset direction makes the chart easier to read because viewers know where to look for label content relative to the anchor point. Inconsistent offsets create a chaotic where viewers must search for each label individually.

Consider the leader line length when positioning labels. Very short leader lines (the body is very close to the ) can make the label appear unanchored. Very long lines (body far from anchor) can make the unclear. Aim for a moderate offset of 50–150 pixels depending on the chart timeframe and information density.

Anchor precision and editing

The stores price and time coordinates with full — the exact price to the available decimal places and the exact date-time of the bar. After placement, you can the anchor coordinates directly in the settings if the click did not land exactly where intended. This is useful for scenarios where the mouse click was slightly off but you want to avoid redrawing the entire label. The ability to fine-tune coordinates means your labels can be pixel-perfect.

For precise placement, to the specific bar before clicking. A zoom level that shows 10–20 bars provides enough detail for accurate anchor placement at the extreme. Holding Shift while clicking may snap the anchor to the nearest bar's high, low, open, or close depending on your platform's snap settings.

Best Practices

★
Pro tip: to significant pivots — clean swing that other analysts can identify. Ambiguous anchors reduce the of the annotation.
★
Pro tip:Use the leader line style to differentiate anchored text from floating labels. Keep the body offset in a consistent direction (e.g. always above for resistance notes, always below for support).
★
Pro tip:Keep labels outside the price lane so they do not obscure candle bodies. The offset feature makes this easy while the leader line maintains the .
ℹ
Note:For frequently used levels (e.g. numbers), consider using a instead of anchored text for a cleaner, more appearance.

Common Mistakes

!
Caution:Anchored text remains pinned to its (price, time) coordinate. If you only need a screen- label that stays in the same screen position regardless of scrolling, use the basic tool.
!
Caution:If the anchor point scrolls off-screen, the label may disappear entirely. Check the annotation list to locate notes that are outside the visible range.
!
Caution:Anchored text with no leader line can appear disconnected from its , especially when the body is offset far from the anchor. Always enable the leader line for clarity.

Comparison with related tools

Text (screen-fixed)
Stays on screen regardless of scrolling. Best for chart-wide legends and general notes.
Anchored Text
Tracks price-time coordinate. Best for level-specific notes that must remain contextually positioned.
Price Label
price display with optional . Best for clean level marking without custom .
Anchored Note
Same anchoring but with colored . Best for observations needing weight.
