The hand tool lets you grab the chart and drag it to shift the visible time and . It is the most efficient way to navigate datasets without zooming out or using the scrollbar. Combined with keyboard modifiers, it gives you precise control over both and vertical scrolling.

Drag mechanics

When the hand tool is active, clicking and dragging moves the chart in the direction of the drag. The panning is and continuous — the chart follows the in real time with no lag or snapping. The visible range updates continuously, and the scrollbar at the bottom reflects the current position within the full dataset.

The drag speed matches the movement exactly (1:1 tracking). There is no or inertia by default, though an optional momentum can be enabled in settings where releasing the mouse button applies a gradual deceleration for a more fluid feel.

Temporary hand mode

The most commonly used workflow is the temporary hand . By holding the Space bar, you temporarily switch to the hand tool regardless of your current active tool. This lets you pan the chart while in the middle of a , placing a , or using the . Releasing Space returns you to your previous tool instantly.

This temporary switch is lossless — your in- is not cancelled. If you were halfway through placing a three- drawing (like a pitchfork), the you already placed remain, and you can continue after panning.

How to use

  1. 1
    Activate hand tool
Select the hand from the toolbar, or hold the Space bar to temporarily switch to the hand.
  2. 2
    Drag to pan
Click anywhere on the chart and drag left, , up, or down. The chart moves with the .
  3. 3
    Fine-tune position
Use the scrollbar or arrow keys for single-bar shifts.
  4. 4
    Release
If using temporary hand , release Space to return to your previous tool. If in permanent mode, click the tool.

★
Pro tip:On trackpads, a two-finger drag pans the chart by default — no need to activate the hand tool explicitly. This is often the fastest way to navigate on laptop devices.

Best practices

★
Pro tip:Hold Space and drag to pan temporarily without switching away from your active drawing tool. Release Space to return to the previous tool with no context switch.
ℹ
Note:On trackpads, a two-finger drag pans the chart by default — no need to activate the hand tool explicitly. On mouse devices with scroll wheels, use Shift + scroll for panning.
★
Pro tip:Use the arrow keys for surgical navigation — one bar at a time — when you need to align or read consecutive bars without overshooting.
ℹ
Note:When momentum panning is enabled, a quick flick of the mouse sends the chart scrolling smoothly, gradually decelerating. This is useful for scanning through long historical periods quickly.

Common issues

!
Caution:If the hand tool does not respond, check that no drawing tool is in an active placement state. Some tools (like labels and shapes) capture mouse input until the placement is confirmed. Press Esc to the placement, then pan.
ℹ
Note:If panning feels too fast or too slow, adjust the pan speed multiplier in the settings. The default 1:1 ratio works for most users, but high-resolution mice may benefit from a reduced setting.
ℹ
Note:The hand tool will not pan beyond the available range. If you hit a boundary at the beginning or end of the dataset, the pan motion is clamped. The scrollbar shows the full extent of available data.

Advanced: auto-scroll

Middle-click and drag activates auto-scroll . In this mode, the further you move the from the initial click , the faster the chart scrolls in that direction. This is useful for sustained scrolling through long ranges without repeated drag motions. The scroll speed is proportional to the distance from the anchor point.

Trackpad gestures

On laptops with trackpads, the hand tool behavior is augmented by trackpad gestures. A two-finger drag pans the chart in any direction without activating the hand tool. A two-finger swipe scrolls quickly through the visible . These gestures work regardless of which drawing tool is active, making trackpads exceptionally efficient for chart navigation without tool switching.

Some trackpads support three-finger drag for custom actions. You can configure three-finger drag to activate the hand tool temporarily (similar to the Space bar behavior) in the chart settings. This provides an additional navigation option for users who prefer gesture-based workflows.

Mouse wheel alternatives

The mouse wheel can be configured for different navigation modes. In default , scrolling the wheel zooms in and out. Holding Shift while scrolling pans horizontally. In alternate mode (configurable in settings), scrolling pans vertically and Shift + scroll zooms. Choose the mode that matches your typical workflow — panning for scanning through price history, horizontal panning for scanning through time history.

Touch screen panning

On -screen devices, a single-finger drag pans the chart. There is no need to activate the hand tool — touch input is always in pan by default. A double-tap-and-hold initiates a zoom gesture. The touch pan behavior works seamlessly with all other touch interactions, letting you switch between panning, , and zooming without mode switches.

Edge cases

When the chart is displaying a non-standard layout with multiple panes vertically, the hand tool pans each pane independently. If you want to pan all panes simultaneously, enable linked scrolling in the layout settings. With linked scrolling, dragging any pane moves all panes in sync, which is useful when comparing the same across different indicators.

When panning reaches the beginning or end of available , the chart cannot pan further. The hand tool changes to show a blocked indicator (a stop or no-entry symbol) to indicate that the data boundary has been reached. New data may arrive via real-time feeds, extending the pan range as new bars are .
