When to Use Each

Choosing between Market and Limit as your default depends on your trading and the market conditions:

  • Market default — best for scalpers and day traders who need instant execution. When trading high-liquidity pairs like BTC/USDT, the bid-ask spread is typically tight (1–5 USD on a 60k BTC), so the cost of using market orders is . The speed advantage outweighs the slightly higher taker fee.
  • Limit default — preferred by swing traders and position traders who entries in advance. Limit orders let you set precise entry and exit levels. The lower maker fees add up over many . Also recommended when trading low-liquidity pairs where market orders would incur significant slippage.
  • Volatile conditions — during high-volatility events (news releases, liquidations), market orders can experience significant slippage. Switching to Limit provides price protection. Your order may not fill, but you avoid overpaying.
  • Low-liquidity pairs — always prefer Limit orders for pairs with thin order books. A market order could move the price several percent against you. Limit orders let you participate without causing price impact.
  • Hybrid approach — set Market as default for speed but use the M/L toggle to switch to Limit when placing orders at specific levels. This gives you the best of both worlds without changing the setting.

Switching on the Fly

The Quick Trade bar with the M/L toggle highlighted — click to switch between Market and Limit without leaving the chart.

When is enabled in Display settings, the bar shows an M/L toggle button. This button lets you switch between Market and Limit modes temporarily without changing your default setting.

  • Toggle behaviour — clicking M (Market) or L (Limit) switches the active for the current trade only. After the order is placed, the mode resets to the default. This ensures your preference is preserved for the next .
  • — the active is highlighted with the accent colour (blue by default). The inactive mode appears dimmed. When Limit is active, the field appears next to the toggle.
  • — the on-the-fly switch does not modify the Default Order Mode setting. To make the switch permanent, change the setting in Settings > Execution.
  • Keyboard shortcut — when the bar has focus, pressing M toggles between Market and Limit modes. This allows quick switching without clicking the UI.

  • Default = Market, = On — the bar shows B/S buttons plus the M/L toggle (defaulting to M). You can switch to Limit on the fly, which reveals the . The bar is slightly wider but more flexible.
  • Default = Limit, = Off — the bar shows B/S buttons but no . Clicking B/S opens a separate dialog to enter the limit price. This is the least convenient combination — enable Price Input if Limit is your default.
  • Default = Limit, = On — the full bar with B/S buttons, M/L toggle (defaulting to L), and the price input field. This is the most capable configuration and recommended when Limit is your default .

★
Pro tip:Enable "" in Display settings to show the M/L toggle and limit price field directly in the bar for quick switching. Without this, you cannot enter limit prices from the bar — you will be prompted in a separate dialog.
!
Caution:During high-volatility events, market orders can experience significant slippage. The fill price may be substantially worse than the last traded price. Consider switching to Limit during news events or low-liquidity periods to protect your entry/exit price.
