Order Book View

Best bid, best ask, micro-price and spread over time, with prints — the touch as a time series.

What it answers

How has the touch moved, and when did the spread widen? Open it from the order book toolbar with View → Spread Timeline, or from Settings → . The , bar and order entry stay in place; only the book pane changes.

Real time: the production Spread Timeline renderer on the live Binance spot book (REST snapshot + 100ms diff stream + trades). Switch symbol or source above; hover for a readout, click to pick a price. Needs a few updates to draw; keeps the last 300.

Anatomy

Ask / bid steps
Best ask and best bid, as steps until the next update.
Shaded band
The spread between them.
Violet line
Micro-price: (bid × askSize + ask × bidSize) ÷ (bidSize + askSize).
Dotted line
Mid.
Bubbles
, sized by quantity and coloured by aggressor.
Bottom strip
Spread per update. Orange bars are blow-outs, above 1.5 × the .

How to read it

  1. Micro-price leaning toward the ask means bid size dominates the touch, so the mid tends to up next (and the reverse).
  2. Orange spread bars liquidity shocks; during them cost more.
  3. at the ask while the micro-price climbs: buying confirmed by the book.

How it is computed

  • Each update stores the best bid, best ask, mid, micro-price and spread in bp; up to 300 updates are kept.
  • Blow-outs are judged against the spread in the , so the flag adapts to the .
Core calculation
const micro = (bestBid * askQty + bestAsk * bidQty) / (bidQty + askQty);
series.push({ t, bid: bestBid, ask: bestAsk, mid, micro, spreadBps });
const median = sorted(series.map(p => p.spreadBps))[n >> 1];
const blowOut = (p: Point) => p.spreadBps > Math.max(median * 1.5, median + 0.05);

Trading signals

Micro-price lead

The micro-price leading the mid by a for several updates is a strong short-horizon cue.

Spread shock

Repeated blow-outs mean market makers are pulling back. Widen limits and reduce size.

Caution:This shows the aggregated book's touch. Very fine on a fast book can make the steps look noisy.

Standalone HTML implementation

A complete, dependency-free page that implements this view on a canvas against the real-time book. It runs below exactly as written. The harness keeps a full local book from the REST snapshot and the 100ms diff stream (resyncing on any sequence gap) and reads from aggTrade. Change SYMBOL / GROUP for another market, or replace snapshot() with your own feed, and the draw() function works unchanged.
