Order Book View

The slippage curve: what a market order of any size would cost right now.

What it answers

How much would it cost to buy or sell size Q at market, now? Open it from the order book toolbar with View → Market Impact, or from Settings → . The , bar and order entry stay in place; only the book pane changes.

Anatomy

X axis
Order size on a √ scale, so sizes get the room.
Y axis
Slippage vs the , in .
Solid line
Average fill price slippage (what you actually pay on average).
Dashed line
Worst level touched (the last price you hit).
Violet guides
1×, 10×, 100× and 1000× your default order size, with the buy and sell cost at each.
Dots
Walls along the .

How to read it

  1. Find your intended size on the x and read the solid line for the expected cost.
  2. A steep means a thin book: costs rise quickly with size.
  3. the buy and sell curves: the cheaper side is the deeper side.
  4. The gap between solid and dashed is how far beyond the average your last fill lands.

How it is computed

  • A buy sweeps the from the best ask outward; a sell sweeps the bids.
  • For each level the swept size is its total and the average fill is cumulativeNotional ÷ total.
  • Slippage = |average fill − | ÷ touch × 10,000 bp.
  • Reference sizes are solved exactly by walking levels until the size is . "—" means visible depth cannot fill it.
Core calculation
const curve = asks.map(l => ({
  size: l.total,
  avgBps:   Math.abs(l.cumulativeNotional / l.total - bestAsk) / bestAsk * 1e4,
  worstBps: Math.abs(l.price - bestAsk) / bestAsk * 1e4,
}));
// exact cost for any size
function impactAt(size: number) {
  let left = size, notional = 0, prev = 0;
  for (const p of curve) {
    const take = Math.min(left, p.size - prev); prev = p.size;
    notional += take * levelPrice(p); left -= take;
    if (left <= 0) return Math.abs(notional / size - bestAsk) / bestAsk * 1e4;
  }
  return null; // unfillable from visible depth
}

Trading signals

Sizing

Split an order once it passes the knee of the , where slippage starts to rise faster than size.

Liquidity regime

A that steepens over time means liquidity is withdrawing, typical before news.

Directional cost

If buying is cheaper than selling, the book is bid heavy: there is more ask liquidity to absorb buys.

!
Caution:This is the cost against visible depth only. Hidden or iceberg size lowers real slippage, and fast markets the book while you trade. Treat it as an for a single instant sweep.

Standalone HTML implementation

A complete, dependency-free page that implements this view on a canvas against the real-time book. It runs below exactly as written. The harness keeps a full local book from the REST snapshot and the 100ms diff stream (resyncing on any sequence gap) and reads from aggTrade. Change SYMBOL / GROUP for another market, or replace snapshot() with your own feed, and the draw() function works unchanged.
